Welcome to my Final Project home page!

In an essay/blog style, I describe my relationship with videogames, and go into some depth with three specific games I've been into lately.

NOTICE: the videos included on this website may contain explicit content, typically in the form of vulgar language. The purpose of the videos is to display my interest in the topic at hand (videogames), and play a legitimate role in completing this assignment.

I have been exposed to video games since I was 4 years old at the latest, learning how to do basic addition as the internet began to expand with YouTube and Twitter, and the significant release of CoD 4 Modern Warfare in 2007.

My parents had a PlayStation 2, where I'd play kid's video games, with the LEGO Games raining supreme in my memory. Then we got a Wii, and there was the Wii sports, and the New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart Wii, and the 007 Golden Eye remake. It was that James Bond game that had the biggest impact on my taste in videogames (i.e. shooter heavy), which was followed by CoD Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii.

Then the rest of my life began after moving to a new town when I was 9 years old. And with growing up came new freedoms, like going where I want during the day, including the library. Though I can only remember borrowing three specific actual books from the library; my time was spent mostly studying, grinding out homework or browsing the small selection of blue and green blueray disc boxes behind the counter. There I could borrow multiple video games for free, like any other book or movie. That's when it started to pick up.

I also had ready access to a usable (though not very capable) computer where I could use the Steam website and app to buy and collect games. And oh boy did I collect.

Disclaimer: I have never played a Pokemon game. My first Smash Bro's game was Ultimate, and I have not invested time in any of the Smash games before it. I avoid games such as LoL, FFXIV, and World of Warcraft.

Here is a non-exhuastive list of games that I remember playing.

You may have noticed the overwhelming number of shooter games. That is where my affinity for games has tended towards, though I love the realm of Sci-Fi, and generally enjoy action games.

Social Media

Why the social aspects of games intrigue me.

Another huge part of my growing up was YouTube, starting to watch it as videogame centric content began to grow in quantity. There I could find not just goofy videos, but all kinds of stuff about video games, from people just playing them, to demonstrations of someone's abilities within the game, and different media works inspired by video games. Now video games is one of the biggest sections of YouTube's net total content. Not to mention the new platforms like Twitch to allow the live streaming of games being played in competition, for fun, or for promotion. I don't aspire to provide entertainment or produce media in these ways, or with these inspirations, though it has crossed my mind, and I have dabbled in using tools like raster graphics editors to further enjoy games.

Juncker is a YouTube creator known for his heavily edited videos displaying montages of gameplay in Escape From Tarkov, by Battle State Games. The video above is one such video. I find this kind of stuff enjoyable. I am the only person I personally know that finds this kind of video in particular enjoyable. However, it is a good example of the lengths that these online communities go to to share and enjoy what they do.

Apart from the videos, the fact that there are people generally that I can connect to through the topic of videogames is also enjoyable. There is the parasocial aspect of youtube, but there are also online communities that organize to host game servers, provide resources on how to get an item or achievement, or just play games together.

Summary

And the rest of this site.

I enjoy videogames deeply (sometimes TOO much), either as fun toys, ways to connect with other people, or as art pieces like movies and books can be. I have spent my entire life playing videogames, and have been surrounded by people that also enjoy and appreciate videogames.

The rest of this webpage is dedicated to further descriptions of games I have been into recently:

  1. No Man's Sky
  2. Squad
  3. and
  4. Escape From Tarkov
